Chapter Eleven

It had been a daunting task to leave Conley’s on Saturday, and harder still to give Conley the day Talib knew he needed to sort through his thoughts and feelings. Lying in the bed on Monday morning, staring at the ceiling, Talib could wait no longer.

Climbing out of bed, he paced his apartment, made coffee, and found things to relocate from one spot to another. After moving a side table for the third time, Talib tossed his hands up in surrender and returned to his room to get dressed. Quickly throwing on a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt, he headed downstairs and waited.

The lilac bushes were in full bloom, and their scent filled him with all of their intended influences. The white surrounded him with purity, and the yellow made him a bit giddy, as if he were floating. Bending over the little bell-shaped lily of the valley flowers, he inhaled their perfume, a sense of happiness and contentment filling him.

It may have been fate that he stood by the orange lily flowers when Conley came outside. The fire of lust and desire overcame him from all of his senses. Snatching a flower, Talib rushed over to Conley’s side, extending his offering like a corsage for a prom date. “Good morning.”

Conley shifted his gaze back and forth from the flower to Talib several times before taking the offering. “Good morning to you as well.” The smile crossing Conley’s face warmed Talib to his core. “Were you waiting for me?”

“Actually, yes. I woke up this morning and couldn’t wait to see you.” The rush of Conley’s pleasure slammed into Talib, forceful and welcome. He waited for me. Watching Conley lift the orange flower to his nose and inhale made Talib want to pull him into a fierce kiss right in front of the building.

When he lowered the flower Conley’s eyes smoldered with passion. He stepped forward and kissed Talib on the lips. A gentle kiss, becoming far more sensuous when combined with the erotic notions it evoked. He caught himself wondering whether Conley’s heart or his own fueled the heat between them. It didn’t matter. They were together.

Reluctantly pulling out of the kiss, Talib took Conley’s hand. “I thought I’d walk you to work.”

“Sounds really nice.” Conley clasped Talib’s fingers, and together they strolled unhurried down the hill in silence. Although Talib enjoyed the physical contact, his desire to reach into Conley’s thoughts tugged at him uncomfortably. Reaching out, he penetrated Conley’s consciousness, desperate to determine the depth of the connection developing between the two of them. He found Conley thinking many things.

I can’t believe he was waiting for me. That’s the sweetest thing anyone’s ever done for me. Why did I even spend a second wondering whether this could be real? I have to stop thinking that no one could truly want me.

“You’re right, Conley. You should stop thinking that way. Anyone would be stupid to take you for granted.” The words escaped Talib’s mouth before he could stop them, but once they were out, he immediately regretted them.
